Recommended Reading

Here is a recommended reading list – books that have made a strong personal impact on me in terms of quality of content and information. Most relate specifically to grain-free/gluten-free diets. Others, while not dedicated grain-free books, I have included them as they contain excellent information relating to food sensitivities in general, or they include excellent grain-free/gluten-free recipes as well as information that is well worth a read.

I have purchased most of these books from Amazon even though I live in Australia and often look for a kindle version where possible.

I earn a very small commission if you choose to purchase any of these books from Amazon, which helps support the running of this website.

The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body–  Comprehensive and wonderfully informative, the book detailing the Paleo Auto Immune Protocol.  Everything you need to heal.  I love this book.   I followed it for 6 months in 2017 and it was a very important piece of the puzzle in healing myself naturally from autoimmune thyroid disease.

Why Isn’t My Brain Working?: A revolutionary understanding of brain decline and effective strategies to recover your brain’s health by Datis Kharrazian – This book changed my life completely, along with his second book on the thyroid.  I take a range of supplements recommended in this book.

It Starts with Food, Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, this book started me on a whole new journey of understanding.  I have done three whole30 challenges and now use the principles in daily life.

Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet. This is the original book I purchased many years ago about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  An excellent read for anyone doing the SCD or GAPS diet, it has great information plus some delicious recipes.

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats. This cookbook is not specifically grain free but a must-have resource for anyone interested in returning to traditional methods of cooking including soaking and fermenting, making your own yoghurt and kefir, soaking and dehydrating your own crispy nuts and just about everything else.  Amazing information about the benefits of coconut oil and animal fats, I refer to this book regularly and find it contains enough completely amazing grain-free recipes to keep it always on the “main shelf” for cookbooks in my kitchen.

I read Izabella Wentz’s first book The Root Cause just after I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2017.  I used the principles in this book, along with the Autoimmune Protocol diet, to naturally bring my thyroid antibodies back into a normal range.  She has since released a new book Hashimoto’s Protocol which goes into more depth and provides a 90-day protocol.  Absolutely essential reading for Hashimoto’s sufferers.
